This dynamic series of 12 free workshops pairs Houston-based artists with talented local teachers to guide young creatives through unique, hands-on experiences. Come learn about culture, explore art techniques, and express your creativity!
Each of the 12 workshops offers a new, exciting lesson on East Asian arts and craft techniques. Participate by signing up outside of the workshop location!

Somegami — Japanese Paper Dyeing: Explore the beauty of Somegami, in this hands-on Japanese paper dyeing workshop. Learn about Japan’s rich tradition of papermaking, explore basic color names in Japanese, and create your own uniquely dyed paper using traditional techniques. You’ll finish the experience by decorating your colorful creations to take home.

Nina Shimaguchi (artist)
Nina is originally from Osaka, Japan, and was raised in a home deeply rooted in traditional Japanese culture. Her grandmother was an instructor of Tea Ceremony, Kimono Dressing, and Kado (Japanese flower arrangement). Nina also began practicing Japanese calligraphy at the age of three.
While volunteering to teach Japanese cultural aspects and language to international students in her college years, she discovered a genuine delightfulness and passion in introducing the unique and beautiful aspects of Japan to others. She officially started sharing Japanese culture in the community of Houston, TX in 2018.
Since then, Nina has led over 400 cultural programs and connected with more than 24,000 people. She specializes in hands-on experiences, adaptable art-based activities, and using traditional crafts in her cultural workshops in order to make Japanese customs engaging and accessible for all age groups.
Tiana Collins (teacher)
Tiana Collins is currently a K-5th Grade Art Teacher in Houston, TX. She is originally from Flint, MI. and has been teaching for 26 years and has taught EC- 12th grade. Her preferred medium of choice is oil or acrylic painting. She believes that art is the bridge between all curriculums.
