Reading is Fun with Animal Friends

May 11, 2026

Sponsored by Phillips 66

Reading is for everyone—but not all children are enthusiastic readers. The Pew Research Center reports that the percent of children who read for fun has been steadily declining. One way to engage reluctant readers is to pair children’s books with kid-friendly programming and activities related to the story.

The Museum presents exciting programming that engages even hesitant readers through Read Strong All Year Long, sponsored by Phillips 66. In April, children met a tiny turtle and a friendly boa as part of story times featuring books such as Snake's Big Mistake. Children also decorated notebooks for writing their own stories—helping to build communication skills.

Read Strong All Year long continues with more events. Up next is a free literacy workshop on the Museum's May 28th Free Family Night. Click here to learn more.
