This dynamic series of free workshops is developed from a residency program that pairs Houston-based artists with talented local teachers to guide young creatives through unique, hands-on experiences. Come learn about culture, explore art techniques, and express your creativity!

Japanese Stencil Dyeing: Ise Katagami: Discover the art of traditional Japanese stencil dyeing using Ise Katagami techniques, a method historically used to decorate kimonos. Participants will learn how intricate patterns are created using handmade paper stencils.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will use pre-made stencils and fabric dye to create their own item, such as a small pouch, to take home.

Nina Shimaguchi (Artist)
Nina is originally from Osaka, Japan, and was raised in a home deeply rooted in traditional Japanese culture. Her grandmother was an instructor of Tea Ceremony, Kimono Dressing, and Kado. Nina also began practicing Japanese calligraphy at the age of three.
While volunteering to teach Japanese cultural aspects and language to international students in her college years, she discovered a genuine delightfulness and passion in introducing the unique and beautiful aspects of Japan to others. She officially started sharing Japanese culture in the community of Houston, TX in 2018. Since then, Nina has led over 400 cultural programs and connected with more than 24,000 people.
She specializes in hands-on experiences, adaptable art-based activities, and using traditional crafts in her cultural workshops in order to make Japanese customs engaging and accessible for all age groups

Ivonne Paumen (Teacher)
Ivonne Paumen is an art educator dedicated to bringing arts, culture, and creativity into the classroom. Bilingual in English and Spanish, she is passionate about inspiring young artists to explore the world through artistic expression and fostering creativity in every student.

Evan Hunt (Teacher)
Evan Hunt is an artist and educator inspired by the flowing lines and rich ornamentation of Art Nouveau masters like Mucha and Klimt. By day he teaches young artists; by night he creates luminous, symbolic paintings rich with flowing linework and layered color. His work centers on light, storytelling, and strong composition.

Maren Slobody (Teacher)
Maren Slobody is an artist focused on portraying real and imagined worlds through drawing and painting. She teaches visual arts at Lanier Middle School, where she is passionate about guiding her students to engage in the artistic process to create authentic artwork while also challenging them to grow their technical skills. She is excited to collaborate with the Children’s Museum to develop programming for the EastArts Workshop series.
