Children’s Museum Houston and Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center celebrate Black History Month all February long!

HOUSTON, TX  (Jan. 27, 2026) — This February, Children’s Museum Houston and Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center invite you to celebrate Black History Month with a month-long lineup of powerful performances, hands-on activities, and meaningful storytelling that honors Black history, culture, creativity, and courage:  past, present, and future.

 

From ancient African traditions to modern-day trailblazers, you are invited to learn, move, create, and be inspired.  Explore Black history through theater, music, dance, crafts, and stories which spark curiosity and encourage kindness, empathy, and confidence.

 

CHILDREN’S MUSEUM HOUSTON BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION

Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026

 

Enjoy a full day of dynamic programming celebrating Black history from ancient Africa to today, including:

  • Express Children’s Theatre: A captivating theatrical performance bringing history to life for young audiences. When: At 11 a.m. in Brown Auditorium.
  • MLK Oratory Contest Winners: Powerful youth voices share words that inspire hope, leadership, and change. When: At noon in Brown Auditorium.
  • Black History Month Story Times: Engaging stories highlighting Black heroes, culture, and resilience. When: At 1 and 3 p.m. in Parent Resource Library.
  • The Griot Speaks:  Master storyteller Manning Mpinduzi-Mott channels the tradition of African griots through drumming, dance, audience participation, and magical tales rooted in African history. When: At 2 p.m. in Brown Auditorium.

 

All-Day Activities:

  • Fearless Trailblazers – Ruby Bridges:  Create a model of Ruby Bridges’ school while learning about her bravery during the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Star Promise: Write a pledge of kindness to remind families that one person truly can change the world.

 

BLACK HISTORY MONTH FREE FAMILY NIGHT THURSDAY SERIES

CHILDREN’S MUSEUM HOUSTON, 5 TO 8 P.M.

 

Each Thursday evening features live performances and hands-on activities celebrating Black culture, history, and creativity:

  • The RAD HipHop Show: A high-energy, interactive performance promoting healthy movement through dance.  When: Feb. 5, 2026
  • Joy of Djembe Drumming:  Experience the rhythms of West African drumming celebrating unity and healing.  When: Feb. 12, 2026
  • African Dance Workshop by Kucheza Ngoma Dance Company:  Traditional and contemporary African dance fusion.  When: Feb. 19, 2026
  • African Rhythms and Spirituals:  Explore songs of resilience and coded messages of freedom.  When: Feb. 26,2026

 

 

BLACK HISTORY MONTH STORY TIME SATURDAYS WITH ABC13 KTRK

CHILDREN’S MUSEUM HOUSTON, 1 P.M.

Each Saturday, families are invited to gather for special Black History Month Story Times led by trusted ABC13 journalists who will share stories celebrating Black history, culture, courage, and community, bringing powerful narratives to life through the voices families see on TV every day. These guest-led readings connect storytelling with representation, literacy, and inspiration, showing young learners that history is made by real people and that their stories matter.

From history-making moments to imagination-fueled fun, this special celebration brings Black history to life in ways children can see, hear, and create.

  • Black History Month Story Time: Chief Deputy Mattie C. Provost spotlights the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black voices. When: At 11 a.m. in Kidtropolis Town Center.
  • AbiyoyoTwanda’s Theatre on Wheels: Explore African customs and traditions through storytelling, movement, and imaginative play. When: At noon in Kidtropolis Town Center.
  • MLK Speech Reenactment: Actor Tanner Ellis delivers a powerful reenactment of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic speech.  When: At 1 p.m. in Kidtropolis Town Center.
  • Hidden Figures Flying Cup Rockets: Learn about Black innovators whose contributions shapes space exploration and science history.  When: All day in OcuSOFT Art Academy.

 

All-Day Activities:

These special story times celebrate the history, heritage, and lasting contributions of the African American community through engaging read-alouds which inspire curiosity, empathy, and pride in young learners.
