About the Event

Diwali also known as the festival of lights, is a worldwide celebration where millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains celebrate the triumph of good over evil with amazing rituals such as festive lights, dancing and much more! Celebrate Diwali with us and take part in several culturally rich activities and catch traditional Indian dance-a-longs as well as story times and art workshops!

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Storytimes: “Shubh Diwali!”: Enjoy a lively reading of Shubh Diwali! By Chitra Soundar and discover the stories, customs, and spirit behind the Festival of Lights.

When: At 10 am and noon in Kaleidoscope

Peaceful Mandalas: Join the Gandhi Museum for a hands-on workshop exploring the art and symbolism of mandalas, creating colorful patterns that celebrate peace and mindfulness.

Limit 12 participants ages 6+; sign ups open one hour prior to workshop.

When: At 3 pm in Kaleidoscope

Silambam Houston: Enjoy this interactive performance with Indian classical dance movements.

When: At 5:30 pm in Brown Auditorium

Diwali Crafts Workshop: Join us for a hands-on craft experience as we explore the Festival of Lights! Children will learn about Diwali, a joyful Indian holiday that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness.

When: At 5, 6, and 7 pm in Kaleidoscope

Hindus of Greater Houston: Rangoli Art

Step into a world of color and creativity as we explore the beautiful art of Rangoli! This traditional Indian decoration is made during festivals like Diwali to welcome happiness and good fortune. In this hands-on activity, children will learn about the meaning and history behind Rangoli, then get to create their own.

When: From 5 to 8 pm in New Kids' Hall

Ghoomar Dance Academy: A captivating traditional Indian dance performance showcasing the rich cultural heritage of India through graceful movements, expressive gestures, and vibrant clothing.

When: At 6:30 in Brown Auditorium

ON-GOING ACTIVITIES

Chalk Rangolis: Create vibrant chalk rangolis, inspired by traditional designs that welcome the goddess Lakshmi and honor the triumph of light over darkness.
