At Children’s Museum Houston, we believe in creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for every child. As part of our commitment to supporting neurodiverse families, we’ve implemented thoughtful initiatives and resources to ensure a memorable and stress-free experience for visitors of all abilities. Here’s what we’re currently doing to champion neurodiversity.
"Sensory sensitive" refers to individuals who have heightened sensitivity to sensory stimuli, such as light, sound, touch, or smell. This sensitivity is common in people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or sensory processing differences. They may become overwhelmed or uncomfortable in environments with loud noises, bright lights, or strong smells.
We dedicate select days to fostering a sensory-friendly environment, where we adjust lighting, lower sound levels, and provide a calmer atmosphere. These days are designed to welcome families who may benefit from a more relaxed visit. On Sensory Friendly Days, we invite families to experience the Museum on their own terms—exploring interactive exhibits, hands-on activities, and valuable Autism resources in a calm, supportive environment. These specially designed events are bursting with excitement while offering a comfortable, accepting space for kids to enjoy. Parents also have the chance to connect with other families and find a welcoming community.
We go the extra mile to ensure a safe and sensory-friendly experience.
• The Museum is closed to the general public, offering a peaceful experience.
• No music is played, and sound-reducing headphones are available.
• Families are welcome to bring their own snacks, as Fresh Café is closed.
