Not the dramatic, up-all-night, something's-wrong panic... The other kind. The one where you're standing in a crowded space with your toddler and suddenly you're calculating exits, scanning for sharp corners, wondering if this place was built for families like yours... or just families in the brochure.
I didn't expect fatherhood to make me this aware, but nine months ago having my daughter changed everything.
Before her, I walked into spaces and saw programming. Now I walk in and see the world at two feet tall. I notice what she notices. I feel what she feels. And the truth? Most spaces aren't built for where she is right now.
That's why the Children's Museum Houston's Gallery of Wonder matters to me... not just professionally, but personally.
Children's Museum Houston (CMH) has built something specifically for the littlest ones: Ages zero to Pre-K. As a dad in the thick of this stage, I can tell you that distinction matters more than most people realize.
Because here's what I've learned about early parenthood...it can be isolating. You want to get out of the house, you want your kid to explore, discover, be curious. But you also want to feel safe. You want a space that gets it. That understands your toddler isn't misbehaving, they're learning. That the mess, the noise, the chaos? That's not a problem. That's the whole point.
Children's Museum Houston has always been that place. A space where families don't have to apologize for being families. Where curiosity isn't managed... it's encouraged.
The Gallery of Wonder takes that mission and meets families right at the beginning of the journey. Not when kids are old enough to read exhibit labels. Now. When everything is new, overwhelming, and magical all at once.
I know because I'm living it. If you're a parent in the trenches of the early years—I see you. And so does CMH. This isn't just an expansion. It's a promise: you belong here, and so does your little one.
