About the Program

Developed in partnership with the University of Texas Children's Learning Institute and Houston Public Library, FLIP Kits can be borrowed for free from any of 39 Houston-area library branches, including the Museum's Parent Resource Library. The Kits are divided into five age groupings - infant, toddler, Pre-K, K-1st grade and 2nd and 3rd grade. Many are available in both English and Spanish, with several others in Chinese, Vietnamese, Urdu, and Arabic.

Each FLIP Kit contains a high-quality children’s book and everything needed to do a related activity (except water!) More than 2,400 FLIP kits are available for check out from the Houston Public Library for use at home.

How does it work?

  • Any Houston-area resident with a valid Houston Public Library card is eligible to check out FLIP Kits free of charge.
  • Families are allowed to check out several FLIP Kits at once. The checkout period is three weeks.
  • If the FLIP Kit you want is not at your library, ask your librarian to have it delivered or you may place a FLIP Kit on hold though the Houston Public Library on-line catalog and pick up at the branch of your choice - including Children's Museum Houston!

Watch FLIP Time - Family Literacy Involvement Program at noon on Fridays on My20 Vision (Channel 20).

Why FLIP?

  • Reading helps with brain development.
  • Reading builds vocabulary.
  • Reading promotes conversation.
  • Reading prepares your child for future success in school and life.

What's in the FLIP Kit?

In addition to a high-quality children’s book, all kits include a Developmental Milestones sheet, information on the Basics Houston and a survey to provide feedback to Children's Museum Houston (CMH). Parents, who complete the survey and return it with their kit, may receive passes good for six individuals to visit the Museum free of charge!
