The Big Emotions Challenge: Using Play to Help Your Children Grow Through Change, Emotions & Social Experiences

A special Virtual Parent-Child Event from Children’s Museum Houston

Session 1: Infants (0–18 months) – 10 to 11 am

Session 2: Preschoolers (3–5 years) – 11:15 am to 12:15 pm

Big emotions can feel overwhelming—for both kids and parents. Whether it’s tantrums, frustration, or social struggles, these moments are not just challenges but opportunities for growth. Your child’s ability to handle emotions and navigate change depends on feeling deeply safe, secure, and connected with you.

Join the Children’s Museum Houston and Kathy Kinskey, M.A., L.P.C., a child and family therapist with over 25 years of experience, for a hands-on session designed to help you use play as a powerful tool to support your child’s emotional development and learning.

In this event, you’ll learn how to:

Turn tantrums into moments of connection instead of power struggles

Use play to build your child’s emotional security, confidence and resilience

Help your child process big emotions without overwhelm or shutdown

Strengthen the bond you share with your child so your child feels safe enough to grow and explore

Encourage social skills by supporting their ability to navigate relationships

Why This Matters:

Your child’s brain is wired to seek guidance from you—but they can only receive and use that guidance when they feel safe, seen, and connected with you. Play is the bridge. Through play, you can meet your child exactly where they’re at developmentally, helping them feel secure enough to handle life’s changes, emotions, and social experiences. This in turn helps them develop resilience, courage and the qualities of true leadership.

This is for you if:

✔ You’re a parent of a child 0-18 months or 3-5 years old

✔ You want to respond to tantrums and big emotions with confidence

✔ You’re looking for gentle, effective tools that work in daily life
