Pour, Flow, Redirect!
Inspired by: FlowWorks
Recommended Age: 36–60 months
How this supports your child’s development:
• STEM/Science Exploration (understanding flow, force, volume)
• Executive Function (planning, predicting, testing ideas)
• Fine Motor (pouring, aiming, scooping)
• Math Thinking (measuring and comparing quantities)
At-Home Setup & Instructions:
1. Water station: Set up a large bin of water outside or in the bathtub along with some
smaller containers.
2. Tools: Provide various containers (yogurt containers, cups, bowls, pitchers) and
scoopers (ladles, measuring cups, spoons).
3. Create water paths: Use funnels, plastic tubes, or props to redirect water from one
container to another.
4. Prediction game:
a. Choose one container to fill.
b. Ask your child to predict how many scoops or ladles it will take to fill it.
c. Use one scooper size to test their prediction.
d. Repeat with a different container or scooper and compare results.
Parent Tip:
Encourage your child to talk through their thinking: “You guessed 5 scoops. Was it more or less?” This builds early measurement skills, encourages reasoning, and keeps the play engaging. Use rich vocabulary: “Let’s make it go faster!” or “What happens if we block this part?” Encourage predictions and revisions.
