Children's Museum Houston celebrates freedom with two days of art, music, poetry, and literature!

June 16 and 19

Celebrate Juneteenth in a spectacular two-day event at Children's Museum Houston, filled with vibrant cultural festivities, inspiring art exhibits, and engaging activities honoring African American heritage and freedom!  Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19,commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and marking the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas in 1865.

 

Juneteenth Celebration – Part 1:  Sunday, June 16

  • Dive into the Juneteenth Champions Art Exhibition curated by Ted Ellis, showcasing the remarkable contributions of 29 influential African Americans that have shaped our world.
  • Feel the rhythm and groove with DJ Ferbidden as he spins tunes and leads exhilarating line dancing sessions
  • Be transported by the captivating performances of Express Children's Theatre, celebrating African American heritage through music, poetry, and dance.
  • Tonya Duncan Ellis will be on site to captivate you with alive reading of her book, “They Built Me for Freedom: The Story of Juneteenth and Houston’s Emancipation Park,” bringing powerful history to life.
  • Van G. Garrett will enchant you with a reading of his book, “Juneteenth: A Picture Book for Kids Celebrating Black Joy,” filling the air with the vibrant spirit of the holiday.
  • Paint a stunning mural that bursts with color and commemorates the spirit of freedom and community.

Juneteenth Celebration – Part 2:  Wednesday, June 19

  • Join forces with fellow revelers to contribute to a vibrant Community Mural, honoring the enduring legacy of African American contributions.
  • Prepare to be dazzled by the Ministry in Motion as speed painter Ange Hillz showcases his electrifying skills, bringing art to life before your eyes.
  • Explore the Juneteenth Champions Art Exhibition, curated by Ted Ellis, which pays tribute to 29 trailblazing African Americans who have left an indelible mark on society.
  • Paint a stunning mural that bursts with color and commemorates the spirit of freedom and community.
