Children’s Museum Houston celebrates freedom with three days of poetry and live performances

June 17 to 19

WHAT:

Juneteenth celebrates the day enslaved African Americans in Texas were told they were free.  On June 19, 1865, Union general Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and proclaimed freedom from slavery in the state. Children’s Museum Houston is proud to celebrate and honor this historic event with three days of interactive activities!

SPECIAL EVENTS:

SATURDAY, JUNE 17

• ‍Rhyme and Reason:  Catch an influential live show about the vital contributions of African Americans to the social, political, and cultural life of the United States, put on by Express Children’s Theatre, at 1 and 3 p.m. in Kids’ Hall.‍
• DJ Ferbidden:  Dance to the beat of high energy tunes, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Kids’ Hall.‍
• Joy of Djembe Drumming:  Immerse yourself in rhythm, at 2 and 4 p.m. in Kids’ Hall.

SUNDAY, JUNE 18 AND MONDAY, JUNE 19

• ‍Juneteenth Performance:  Watch a commemorative, poetic production put on by Ensemble Theatre.  Event Times: June 18 at 2:30 p.m.; June 19 at 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. in Brown Auditorium.
