Dogs can do some amazing things; they can even help children learn to read. Whether joining story times as therapy animals or simply ‘listening’ as a child reads a book, man’s best friend has been shown to reduce reading anxiety and boost literacy skills.
In July, the Museum presented a doggie literacy day sponsored by Phillips 66. This event featured storytimes with therapy animals from Faithful Paws, as well as appearances by Clifford the Big Red Dog. Programming was part of Read Strong All Year Long, a literacy initiative that encourages families to read together. Next month, this program will celebrate its 10th anniversary.
