Children’s Museum Houston unveils teacher-and-artist initiative in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month—continuing year-round!

In partnership with Asia Society Texas

HOUSTON (May 8, 2025)Teachers meet Artists. Tradition meets Tomorrow. Children’s Museum Houston is stirring up the pot of creativity and culture with its newest hands-on adventure: EastArts—a kaleidoscope of color, clay, and cultural connection, designed to celebrate and sustain East Asian artistic traditions.

In celebration of AsianAmerican and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, EastArts rolls outa series of 96-workshops which spotlight traditional East Asian arts andcrafts, bursting with imagination, meaning, and centuries-old magic.

At the core of EastArtsis something uniquely Houston: a partnership between local elementary andmiddle school art teachers and artists who are experts in East Asian cultureand techniques and incorporate it into their practice. Together, they co-createhands-on workshops that put time-honored techniques—like Japanese nerikomiclay stacking and Korean minhwa folk painting—into the hands of curiouskids. Each session spotlights a distinct artistic tradition from East Asiancountries, sparking creativity, cultural pride, and a deeper appreciation forthe art of storytelling—one brushstroke, slab, or swirl at a time.

In addition, 24-workshopswill be hosted during Free Family Nights to ensure equal access for every budding artist in the city.

CULTURAL COLLAB: ARTIST+ EDUCATOR

EastArts pairs the practical experience of classroom educators with the deep cultural knowledge and skill of Houston-based artists. EastArts blends these powerful ideas:

  1. Spotlight on East Asian Techniques: From block printing to kite building, children will discover art which incorporates both traditional and contemporary techniques.
  2. Artist +Teacher Tag Teams: Local artists bring the technique; art teachers bring the classroom magic.
  3. Character Through Culture: Every activity connects back to core values like patience, creativity, and respect through meaningful crafts.
