John P. McGovern Kid's Hall

Traveling art exhibits by children across the world are showcased in the John P. McGovern Kid's Hall alongside Junktion, a collection of activity tables that form together to make a train.

Three carts of Junktion host make-and-take craft activities, which change weekly in accordance with the WonderWeek themes. On other carts, children may paint their faces, create their own tune at the sound carts or put on a puppet show.

Throughout the year, many special events are held in Kids' Hall, including the widely popular New Year's Noon - Houston's longest running New Year celebration for children.

Wendel Minor: In the American Tradition

May 1 - July 27, 2008

Our nation’s founding fathers. The Statue of Liberty. The first voyage to the moon. These and many other historic images help create shared beliefs in America and are a favored subject of illustrator Wendell Minor. The Children’s Museum of Houston will showcase the work of this acclaimed artist when we present Wendell Minor: In the American Tradition with the dual goal of encouraging child literacy and artistic appreciation.

A long-standing fascination with America’s national heroes, traditional folkways and natural wonders both great and small inspire the rich accomplished work of Wendell Minor. His serene watercolor paintings delight the senses of both children and adults as Minor’s simple, classical style provides a visual exploration to the many faces and landscapes of America. During his career, Minor has illustrated more than 30 children’s picture books and is the artist of more than 2,000 book jacket covers including, David McCullough’s 1776, and Truman, Pat Conroy’s Prince of Tides, and Larry McMurtry Terms of Endearment. This exhibit will highlight more than two decades of work that Minor has contributed to the field of children’s book illustrations.
