The Science Workshop is filled with tools, including all the standard hand held tools as well as a variety of saws, drills and sanders. Since safety is paramount, children must first demonstrate competency with the hand tools before they can be taught to use the power tools. In addition to tools, all types of materials are made available to the children, ranging from consumer electronics (that can be taken apart and then reassembled) to building materials, including wood, modeling clay and paper mache. All activities are overseen by the site director and additional staff and volunteers.

By working on self-created projects, students start to see the connections between disciplines such as math, science and art. One student noted the need to find area and perimeter to complete his project: “I remember doing this in math class, but I never really understood how to do it until right now.” |
