REMEMBER YOUR FIRST CAR?

Go on a ride through Darla Lexington’s exclusive vintage pedal car collection
In memory of Houston philanthropist John M. O’Quinn
Hot rods ready to rumble! Remember your first set of wheels? Not the first one you drove as an adult, but the very first car you owned as a child? Cruise back in time through Darla Lexington’s vintage pedal car collection in Remember Your First Car?, an exclusive installation of more than 100 children’s pedal cars on display from Nov. 15, 2012 to March 24, 2013 at the Children’s Museum of Houston.
Remember Your First Car? is the result of Darla Lexington and John M. O’Quinn’s passion for collecting cars. It tells the nostalgic story of how they began collecting classic cars together in 2003 in hopes to one day build a world class automotive history museum for Houston.
Darla was the first to ignite their desire for a pedal car collection. “[When I was a young girl,] my sister and I used to dress up and pretend to go shopping at Foley’s in our pedal cars,” said Darla. John was amused by Darla’s excitement and surprised her with more than 100 pedal cars from a collector in Maine. And so, they spent many years “collecting history”.
From an original 1927 Cadillac to a 1952 Fire Chief Truck, take a spin through a buffed selection of retro models displayed in the John P. McGovern Kid's Hall. The collection spans from the turn of the century to the present with the oldest pedal car built in 1910 to a much recent 1981 Fire Truck. Pedal cars go back in history to the 1890's on the heels of the invention of the automobile. They were often the exact miniature replica of real cars on the road, from their front grilles to the rear fenders. Today, pedal cars are readily available on the collector's market.
Remember Your First Car? is on loan from Darla Lexington in loving memory of her soul mate Mr. John M. O’Quinn.
