It is time to explore how many Mentos we should use to make the tallest possible soda geyser. Due to the way the outer shell of Mentos are made, each one has a very high surface area already. So, the more Mentos, the better, right?
Well, not necessarily. Too many Mentos and some will be shoved back up into the tube before they had a chance to drop into the soda, blocking the nozzle and reducing the height of they geyser. So what is the best number of Mentos? We’ll have to test it!
What To Do:
Buy or build a soda geyser generator (building one is covered in episode 1).
Buy lots of Mentos and several bottles of soda (all the same brand).
Get 2 partners – one will launch the geyser and the others can measure the height.
Set up the soda geyser generator per instructions, but vary how many Mentos (we did them by twos – 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 , 11, and 13).
Countdown and release the geyser.
Measure the maximum height of the geyser and record. We used some homemade altitude trackers like the ones here. We’ll go over this in a future O Wow Moment video.
Calculate the average height of all your launches.
Repeat steps 5-8 several times for each number of Mentos (we did three tests per each). MAKE SURE TO THOROUGHLY DRY OUT YOUR GEYSER GENERATOR BETWEEN LAUNCHES.
Repeat steps 4-9 to test all the different numbers of Mentos. Compare the averages – which did best?
What, you thought I’d actually just tell you how many we found worked best? Wrong! Go have some messy fun and find out for yourself (or wait until Episode 7 when we attempt to break the world record for tallest geyser).
