National Cut Your Energy Costs Day is January 10, and the Children’s Museum of Houston is teaming up with Reliant, an NRG company, to offer $1 off admission to the first 1,000 visitors. The offer coincides with the opening of Reliant’s new Power Star Energy Challenge game in the Museum's Kidtropolis exhibit, which teaches children about energy efficiency. The game is part of Reliant’s effort to inspire the next generation to make smart choices about how they use energy.
Reliant’s Power Star Energy Challenge game, located within the Office of Energy Initiatives, encourages children to learn more about how we use energy to get the electricity we need. The exhibit also features an array of light bulbs and showcases which one uses the least energy. Children will learn easy ways to conserve energy through friendly energy-saving tips, such as: • Replacing a dirty air filter to reduce energy used by AC units by 5-15 percent • Using ceiling fans to allow you set the thermostat about 4°F warmer and still stay cool • Drying loads of laundry back-to-back to take advantage of heat built up during the previous cycle • Installing a programmable thermostat to lower your energy bill by 10 percent
