Back by popular demand, Children’s Museum of Houston encourages “maker attitude” with DIY exhibit!
Exhibit Opens January 16, 2016
You can make it! Anyone can build and create: all you need is a little initiative, teamwork and a do-it-yourself (DIY) attitude. Strap on your thinking cap and put your problem-solving skills to the test in the updated, hands-on exhibit, Made in Your Mind, open for making Jan. 16 – May 8, 2016 at the Children’s Museum of Houston. From fabulous toys to high-flying adventures, creating your own projects is fun as long as you have a maker attitude!
“The maker attitude is the intrinsic drive to create projects based on personal desires. Instead of spending money on something already made, a maker develops something new or modifies something existing that meets their needs. Kids need more opportunities to problem solve their way through projects and learn new skills, all of which are essential to develop the maker attitude,” said Director of Educational Technology and Exhibit Development, Keith Ostfeld. “We want to take them back to basics and show them that with a little time and patience, anyone can make something fun and interesting.”
Made in Your Mind instills the importance of engineering and perseverance in kids through a hands-on, step-by-step process. Its return features an all-new electronic interface to help guide families through the process of making the projects. Each project focuses on key skill sets, identified by icons around the exhibit. The step-by-step method provides an opportunity for kids to develop these fundamental skills they can apply towards making their own projects.
In addition, each table is themed around a specific content topic, allowing families the opportunity to select projects around their interests. With a multitude of projects divided into constantly-changing themes, Made in Your Mind demonstrates that with critical thinking and communication you can do anything to which you set your mind.
“Experience builds knowledge and skills,” said Ostfeld. “Made In Your Mind provides a place for kids to practice and learn in a fun, safe setting. After all, what’s ‘made in your mind’ can be made reality so long as you have the right knowledge, skills, and attitude.”
WHAT WE HAVE IN MIND FOR YOU:
As you enter Made in Your Mind, you will find 16 Project Tables with each providing a set of themed projects for you to make. Projects will be organized by topics such as “things that fly” or “music-makers!” The main menu screens on each Project Table provide key information about each project including age appropriateness, difficulty level, and estimated time to complete the project.
Select a theme to try, a skill you want to build, choose a table at random, or take a look at our project display and find a specific project you want to try. Then, head over to the Project Table and start building away! Each Project Table provides a workspace, materials, tools needed to complete the project, and interactive, touch-screen video instructions to help with the making of each project.
After building your creation and giving it a test, learn about the science, engineering, and mathematical concepts that allow your project to work. Then, make any changes, adaptations, and tweaks necessary to make it awesome! Remember: practice makes perfect!
All Made in Your Mind activities are included with admission to the Children’s Museum of Houston. And, feel free to make more than one project. Don’t forget: any project you make, you can take home with you!
