We’re expanding minds not just walls! And yes, we will stay open during our new building construction! The Museum broke ground on August 27, 2007 for the new Museum wing. We will be expanding our building and anticipate completion by March 2009.
The expansion will result in doubling the Museum’s size to a total of 83,000 square feet. We will expand our bilingual (Spanish), community-based outreach programs and provide classrooms and lab spaces through the Museum’s Institute for Family Learning. Also, the Museum’s on-site Houston Public Library branch will double in size.
Your visit to the Children’s Museum will be wonderful as always! Our new parking garage opened in December 2007, which offers even more space for our visitors at rates from $3 to $7 (depending on the length of your visit). There will be temporary closure of portions of our outdoor courtyard, but everything inside will remain the same during construction. We are doubling the size of our Museum, but the current galleries and their exhibits will remain fully functional during the expansion process.
The new building addition will seamlessly join the current building and will house seven new exhibit galleries designed to provide families with interactive learning experiences.
Even though we are in the construction phase, the Museum still needs to raise money to complete the Capital Campaign. There are several ways you can support the Museum’s expansion, including through Museum Membership or pledges. Please contact our Membership Department to purchase a Membership (they make great gifts, too!) or our Development Department to make a contribution.
