AMAZING AVIATION: BIRDS ARE FLY!
Children's Museum of Houston celebrates nature’s amazing high fliers
August 15—21

Did you know the mockingbird is the official bird of Texas? Nearly 360-bird species breed in Texas, but only the Golden-cheeked Warbler nests exclusively in this state. Come out of your nest and explore the wonders, fascinations, and interesting facts of birds and their behavior during our Amazing Aviation week.

ACTIVITIES:

Amazing Avians: Stop by the EcoStation and discover some interesting facts about birds and their nests, listen to the chirps of various birds and compare them to each other, and create a bird field guide you can take home to explore the amazing birds in your neighborhood.
Paper Chopper: Birds aren’t the only ones who can fly. Design your own helicopter and soar to new heights in Junktion!
Cockpit View: Just because you can’t physically fly like a bird doesn’t mean you don’t know what it’s like to be in the sky. Use your imagination and experience from a plane ride and draw what you might see out the window from the cockpit of a plane in Junktion.
Parachute Physics: See what the wind can do to a miniature parachute that you create in Junktion.

It’s that time of year again and what better way to get motivated than by visiting the Children's Museum of Houston for back to school fun. Join us for activities that will have you ready for a new school year in no time. So grab your notepad, sharpen your pencils, and take notes on all of the fun and creative things you will do at CMH. School starts Aug. 23 for HISD.

ACTIVITIES:

Project Fashionista: Back to School Edition. Before hitting the books, come hit our “runway!” Design, create, and model your own line of clothing made of found and recycled materials that we provide. Here’s your chance to strut your stuff in the Brown Auditorium!

What Shall I Wear Today? Be sure to check out Math Cart to see how many different creative combinations of outfits you can create, just in time for school!

Design a Ride: Tired of seeing that big old yellow school bus? Do you wish you could ride in style to school? Come decorate your version of a school bus by adding some color and cool designs to the traditional bus.

Come celebrate some of the greatest inventors, such as Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, and James Watt for their risk-taking chances which changed our world. Put on your thinking hat and unleash your creative side in activities that will bring out the inventor in you. What great invention will you come up with?

ACTIVITIES:

Blinky Bugs: LED Creatures. Build a creature that is truly unique! Use batteries and LEDs to make a creature whose eyes flash when its antenna moves in Inventors’ Workshop.

Rube Goldberg Invention: Design your own complicated invention to perform the simplest task in the spirit of the famous inventor Rube Goldberg at Junktion.

Children's Museum of Houston Welcomes Aspiring Miss Teen Texas Asia Jones
Saturday, June 19th

Miss Teen Piney Woods, Asia Jones, will be volunteering on Saturday, June 19, at the Children’s Museum of Houston. Jones is running for Miss Teen Texas and is required to do community service. In an effort to enhance the self-esteem and self-worth of children of all ages, Jones took the opportunity to get in touch with Houston kids by selecting the Children's Museum of Houston as her place for service. She will perform duties as assigned and will be available for a meet-and-greet.

Come out and hang out with Miss Teen Piney Woods. Get your picture taken with her and get her autograph! Don’t miss this chance to cheer her before her big competition. The Miss Teen Texas competition will be held on July 2 on the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington.

Administered by Texas Children’s Hospital Mobile Unit and Blue Cross/Blue Shield
LIMIT FIRST 150 PEOPLE

All children under 18 needing immunizations as required for admission by the Harris County school districts will have the opportunity to receive FREE vaccinations at the Children’s Museum of Houston (CMH). Blue Cross/Blue Shield and the Texas Children’s Hospital will be administering them on different occasions. To qualify, parents and guardians will need their child’s immunization records. No need to pre-register.

After the vaccinations, children and families are invited to enjoy the numerous hands-on exhibits CMH has to offer. Check out our new exhibit Secrets of Circles or head outside to FlowWorks and EcoStation!

Are you tired of having to constantly replace the batteries in your toys? If so, check out the Children's Museum of Houston as we go retro. These retro toys will surely keep you entertained for hours to come. Experience good old fashion games such as Pick-Up Sticks and Chinese Yo-Yo.

ACTIVITIES:

Cardboard Automata: Mechanical Toys. It’s your chance to create a mechanical toy. What will you come up with?
Event Time: All day; check times.
Old Fashion Spud: Make your own paper version of the classic Mr. Potato Head.
Pick-Up Sticks: Try playing this old fashioned game your parents and grandparents played as kids.
Chinese Yo-Yo: Are yo-yo Have fun playing with the yo-yo you make yourself.
Sink or Float: Make sure to stop by the Science Station to find out which toys will sink or float and discover the mystery of density.
Printmaking with Toys: Create a colorful art design by “driving” a toy truck through a puddle of paint and onto construction paper in the Alexander Art Academy.

Let Out Your Inner Detective during Forensics Week at the Children's Museum of Houston

Want to be the next Sherlock Holmes or CSI detective? Do you have what it takes to solve a mystery? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions you should inspect our Forensics Week at CMH.

ACTIVITIES:

Secret Code: Keep your entire secret messages safe by making a cypher wheel to encrypt them.
Fingerprint Personality: Compare your fingerprint to others in your family by magnifying it. See how different each person’s fingerprint is.
Who Done It: Solve the cases of the Junktion mysteries by examining the evidence.
Forensics Lab: Crack the case by following the clues left out our very own Forensics Lab in Kidtropolis, USA.
Forensics Fun: The Science Station will have a series of hands-on activities that will show you the fascinating and interesting sides of forensics science. Put your detective skills to work by dusting and analyzing fingerprints to solve a case.

Para los niños es un programa de aprendizaje familiar que ayuda a los padres quienes su primer idioma es el español. El programa es facilitado gratuitamente por bibliotecas y el Children's Museum of Houston, y todos los materiales y recursos requeridos para establecer un programa en su localidad están disponibles gratuitamente por medio de los contactos en las páginas electrónicas que se encuentran aquí.
