Children’s Museum of Houston hosts annual invention competition
Grand Prize winner to receive free patent application opportunity
Saturday, May 19

Come out to the Museum for a fun-filled day celebrating the 24th Annual Young Inventors’ Showcase of Houston. Children from Kindergarten through 8th Grade will take imagination to the next level by showing off their inventions. There will be winners in each age category and the Grand Prize winner will receive a free patent application! Spend the day learning about kids like you and participate in exhilarating activities.

SPECIAL EVENT LINE-UP:

•Young Inventors’ Showcase: This competition of mixed creativity and engineering gives participants a chance to apply for a patent for free. Check out their inventions, see who gets the Grand Prize, meet the finalists and hear words of encouragement for all future inventors!
   oRegistration and set-up: 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. in Kid’s Hall.
   oJudging: 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
   oPublic Viewing: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
   oFinal Judging: 1 – 2 p.m.
   oAwards Ceremony: 2:30 – 3 p.m. in the Brown Auditorium.

ON-GOING ACTIVITIES:

•Electromechanical Folk Art: Take apart, explore pieces, and put them back together into a sculpture at Inventor’s Workshop.

•Natural Inventions - Helicopters: Design a paper copter that moves just like a helicopter seed at EcoStation.

•Nature Knows Best: Take a look at man-made inventions and match them to their natural inspirations at EcoStation.

•Invent a Color: Stop by the Alexander Art Academy and mix colors together to create your very own color. Then, name it!

•Cup Tower: Use trial and error to make your tower as tall as possible at Junktion.

•Invent Your Own Whirlygig: Invent your own unique musical instrument at Junktion.

It’s finally here! Kick off summer in style at your ultimate vacation destination, the Museum. We have all the fun you need to get ready for the best summer ever!

SPECIAL EVENTS:

•Spotlight Performance – The 3 Puppeteers present “Summer Time”: Kenny and the gang try to figure out something to do for the summer. However, everywhere they go is either packed or they are too young to join in. Come to CMH and see how they’ll create their own summer fun at the Brown Auditorium.

oSaturday, May 26 at 2 p.m.

ON-GOING ACTIVITIES:

•K’Nex Gears: Gears are a simple machine that allows many everyday items to do work. Build a variety of machines that use gears at Science Station.

•Gear Clock: Check out how gears inside a clock make it work at Science Station.

•Mechanical Power to Electrical Power: Discover how gears create electricity when they are turned at Science Station.

•Sun Visor: Head to Junktion and make a colorful visor to keep your face cool and shaded all summer long.

•Silly Sunglasses: Decorate your own pair of stylish sunglasses for summer at Junktion.

•Wind Sock: Sock it to me and create an art piece to blow in the summer breeze at Junktion.

•Ocean Rubbing Plates: Stop by the Alexander Art Academy and learn to identify ocean creatures by making rubbings.

Children’s Museum of Houston kicks off summer fun with tribute to sun safety on Don’t Fry Day
Bring chapstick and sunblock for discounted admission
Free admission to military families
Memorial Day Weekend, May 25 –28

The Children’s Museum of Houston (CMH) wants you burned out of fun, not sunburned this summer! That’s why we’re kicking off Memorial Day weekend celebrating “Don’t Fry Day” on Fry-day, May 25. “Don’t Fry Day” is an actual national holiday that creates awareness about the dangers of the sun, such as skin cancer. We will have several interactive activities so you can learn how to prevent getting scorched in the outdoors!

PREVENTING OUR SERVICE MEMBERS FROM FRYING
In celebration of “Don’t Fry Day,” we are also asking visitors to bring any new chapstick or travel-size sunblock to receive a $1 off admission discount, May 25 – 28. We will donate these to our service members.

MEMORIAL DAY TRIBUTE
In honor of our dedicated service members and their families, up to 6 people can receive free admission. They’ll also receive a 10 percent discount in Fiddle Sticks Toys— all with an active duty military ID, May 25 – 28.
