Children’s Museum of Houston celebrates Texas African American history and pride
June 16 – 19

Make yummy ice cream, June 19!

Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It celebrates the day enslaved Blacks in Galveston heard about the Emancipation Proclamation for the first time. Explore the history and contributions of African Americans during our Juneteenth Celebration, in which we’ll be making really tasty ice cream!  Yummy!
 
ACTIVITIES:

Juneteenth Timeline: Dive into the rich history of African Americans as you create a timeline of events related to Juneteenth. Then, draw a picture to explain each event.
Juneteenth: A Texas Holiday. Juneteenth has been celebrated every year since 1866. In 1980, it became a Texas holiday. Make a picture of the state flower to commemorate this holiday!

Test Your Knowledge:
Pick up an African American achievement scavenger hunt sheet and test how much you know about their contributions.

SPECIAL EVENTS:
Musically Inventive: Did you know African-American inventor, Joseph Dickinson, invented many improvements to musical instruments? Create wild and wacky ways to bring out your inner song!
June 16 – 18: All Day

Freedom Song Tambourines:
Many freedom songs had their beginnings following the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. Create a tambourine commemorating freedom!
June 16 – 19: 10 a.m., 1 & 3 p.m.

Juneteenth Collage (Because I am Free):
Cut out or draw pictures of things you can do because of your freedom.
June 16 – 19: 11 a.m., 2 & 4 p.m.

Ice Cream Innovations:
Did you know, in the 1800’s, African-American caterer, Augustus Jackson, developed ice cream flavors people all over Philadelphia craved? Mix ingredients and flavors to make your very own special ice cream!
June 19: All Day

Spotlight Performance: Second Generation Dance Company.
This amazing dance group will perform stories from Africa through theatre and dance.
June 19: 6:30 p.m.
