DUCT TAPE JAM

DuctTape_web.jpg
Have a good ol’ sticky time with duct tape!
September 6 - 12

It has been said duct tape can fix anything. Let your creativity and design skills roll during our Duct Tape Jam!  Have a sticktastic time as you construct items out of this extraordinary invention.  And best of all, you can find duct tape at home so you can make it time-again the next time you’re in a sticky situation.  Hold yourself together as you deal with this quick fix stuff.

ON-GOING ACTIVITIES:

•Linear Art:  Create your own linear-art masterpiece by bringing lines to life with vibrant duct tape colors at the Alexander Art Academy.

•Surviving the Fall:  Duct tape takes flight for this exciting adventure in force and motion at the Inventors' Workshop!  Invent a package system that will survive a 14-foot drop with the least force applied inside the package.

•Duct Tape Wallet:  Make your own money holder in Junktion.

•Duct Tape Bracelet: Combine cool patterns to make a fashion statement at Junktion.

•Duct Tape Charms:  Charm your classmates with some colorful home-made accessories at Junktion.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to some historians, Permacel, formerly a division of Johnson & Johnson, originally developed duct tape in 1942 during World War II as a rubber-based adhesive tape with a durable fabric backing that resisted water for use as sealing tape on ammunition cases.  Because of these properties, it was also used to repair military equipment quickly, including jeeps, firearms, and aircraft.

NASA has used duct tape in some emergency situations. One such usage occurred in 1970, when the square carbon dioxide filters from Apollo 13's failed command module had to be modified to fit round receptacles in the lunar module, which was being used as a lifeboat after an explosion en route to the moon. A workaround used duct tape and other items on board Apollo 13, with the ground crew relaying instructions to the flight crew. The lunar module's CO2 scrubbers started working again, saving the lives of the three astronauts on board.
